MCA - CERTIFICATION AND MANNING LEVELS.

The website mcga.gov.uk should be on your computer's list of "favourites" if not there already. Amongst "mandatory" reading to be found - the MSN 1792(M) The Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY2) is one to take a copy of, and check regularly for updates. Please note that the end of June 2006 deadline for an MCA Yacht Rating Certificate to be required by Deckhands aboard both commercial and private vessels over 24m loadline, and one such certified rating to be carried aboard, - has now passed, and is in force. The MCA has confirmed that a Deckhand in possession of an RYA or IYT Coastal Skipper, or above, does not require a Yacht Rating Certificate also. For full information please contact the MCA or visit: www.mcga.gov.uk - click on "Guidance and Regulations", then click on "MGN"s, - MGN270(M) is the one you are looking for. There is also a recent Download/CD/Pamphlet available from the MCA entitled "A Master's Guide to the UK Flag" which has a great store of definitive, essential information for all those commanding a UK Red Ensign vessel. Please also note that the "written references" we request when Crew register, also now form part of the MCA requirements for progressing up the qualification ladder, details of exactly how these should be formed is also available from the MCA website - Training and Certification section, MSN 1802(M) Certificates of Competency: Yacht Deck Officers, Part A7, Annex C. The website www.mptusa.com is also very helpful to consult in the regard of Manning levels, it is perhaps easier to understand and navigate - but again, definitive advice must always be MCA. Those with non-MCA certifications, please note you can apply to them for Certificates of Equivalency ( CEC )- giving you an MCA ticket/rating. The format for doing this varies in most cases but our understanding is the basic charge is UK £76.00 plus charges for required orals etc..

KEEP IN TOUCH, UPDATE CV/CONTACT DETAILS, PLEASE DO AND PLEASE DONT'S FOR CREW :

DO keep in touch even if you have no immediate Crew requirement, or are looking for a new job. Send us a postcard of the desert island you are currently marooned upon, the heiress's/playboy's Mansion you are currently house-guest in, or with tips on new "must-see" destinations !
DO NOT keep in touch with anyone else, - we can make exceptions in the case of immediate family.
DO remember to get written references from your previous employments - we do not accept "Oh, I forgot to ask for one" or "my dog ate it" - and neither do our Clients. Please also have telephone numbers and email addresses of recent "referees" ready, as our Clients usually wish to correspond with them first-hand as well.
DO NOT amongst these "referees" include previously mentioned immediate family, girl/boyfriends, or your local publican ( bar owner )- all of which regulary happens. Remember, WE are your family now, - available on request are Sea Gem "Logo" tattoo designs approved by most leading Captains. On a serious note though, please think carefully before having ANY tattoos done on "visible" parts of your body, including arms - as they can be an obstacle to being accepted on most Yachts.
LASTLY DO NOT "elaborate" on your cv - in other words please keep it FACTUAL. For some reason, just like with a "toupee" ( false hair-piece ), however well this elaboration is done - it is ALWAYS immediately noticeable. We should mention though, that if your only hobby/interest really IS "bungy-jumping" ( as has occurred previously ) you might not be blamed for missing that out.

NEWSFLASH - SEA GEM "2008 SPECIAL EVENT" NOW CONFIRMED !!!

As we look forward to our 2008 Event, a brief report on the 2007 "Water Polo Challenge", that proved about as chaotic as previous ideas. As usual, the fault lay partly with ourselves for advising that "all you need for entry is a pair of Speedos or a Bikini". Well, the Crew of one Yacht decided that this could mean Bikinis for the boys and Speedos for the girls. After complaints from guests at the posh hotel that had, in a moment of bad judgement, agreed to stage our "spectacle", - the Event was abandoned.

Next year 2008, in an attempt to restore both good taste and some aesthetic values, we ambitiously plan a "Gondola Race in Venice" ! A note to Captains - we are unsure at present whether these craft are MCA Compliant, but shall keep you posted. In addition to a Winner's Trophy, there shall be a special prize for the best "Carnival Mask" - so get to work with that "papier-mache" now. Dates to be advised.
